Hi-Tech 2020 all about smartphones, more robots, e-bike mania

The end of the year brings budgets and forecasts for the near future. This is the meaning of nineteenth edition of TMT Predictions, the report produced by Deloitte which aims to connect the dots of past changes and estimate the future. That of 2020 appears to be all about technology: robots, artificial intelligence, electric transport, increasingly sophisticated cell phones that have now become mechanical extensions of the human arm, audiobooks and podcasts to optimize time.

SMARTPHONE

In numbers this estimate says that in the next year the entire smartphone ecosystem will exceed 900 billion dollars, where the three main sources of revenue will be dealer, app (especially video games), e Accessories, which together will produce over 370 billion dollars, equal to 81% of the total. According to the data that emerged from the report, in 2019 the advertising investments on smartphones and tablets: Between 2020 and 2021, mobile advertising spending is expected to increase by 13% and smartphone advertising spending alone will reach $176 billion in 2020, boasting an 18% increase over 2019.

As for apps, total revenues of 2020 billion dollars are expected for 118, of which 80 billion from the video game sector, 10% more than in 2019. Revenues from video game apps will exceed 100 billion dollars in 2022 , and 80% will be attributable to the smartphone. The segment relating to accessors will reach 77 billion dollars in 2020, mainly thanks to the audio, power and protection categories: 129 million wireless headphones are expected to be sold in 2020, compared to 46 million in 2018, and 19.4 billion in revenue from the sale of power banks in 2025 , thanks also to wireless chargers and USB-C, which will be 40 times faster than current standards.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Deloitte predicts that more than 2020 million AI-related edge chips will be sold in 750, that is, a series of chips that develop machine learning functions biometric recognition features, augmented reality, voice assistance and photos – directly from the device on which they are installed, rather than remotely. Furthermore, they are smaller in size, cheaper and consume less battery. This market is estimated to have $2,6 billion in revenues, with an annual growth rate of 36% over three years.

ROBOTICS

According to the TMT Predictions report, noIn 2020, companies will buy more than 1 million robots, and half will be dedicated to professional services. The robotics sector will record significant growth rates: a turnover of 18 billion dollars is expected for industrial robots, +9% compared to 2019, and 16 billion dollars for those of professional services, +30%.

The global trade war has not spared the robotics sector which has experienced two complex years: however, the category of industrial robots, mainly used in the production of automobiles, electronics, metals, plastics and chemicals, will score 2021% more by 93 compared to 2016.

ELECTRIC BICYCLES

We will go electric: in the next three years, the number of people who use the bicycle to commute home to work will increase by 1 percentage point. In 2023 they will be sold worldwide 40 million e-bikes, for a total turnover of about 20 billion dollars. By 2023, the total number of e-bikes on the road in the world is expected to reach its share 300 million both consumers private individuals, both in sharing mode, with an increase of 50% compared to 200 million in 2019.

A study conducted in the USA has shown that 40 minutes a week for a month on an e-bike improves the cardiovascular system, aerobic capacity and blood sugar control.

FROM BOOK TO AUDIOBOOK, FROM RADIO TO PODCAST

According to Deloitte by 2020 global audiobook market to grow by 25% to reach $5 billion in revenue, while that of podcast will increase 30% to a total of $1,1 billion. While these may seem small compared to the $42 billion radio and $51 billion music industries, the global media and entertainment industry is showing growth rates of 4%. To date, globally, there are more than half a billion audiobook listeners, mainly concentrated in the United States and China, which together account for 75% of the market. One hundred million dollars are revenues in the four Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland), and 500 in the rest of Europe. In 2025, the podcast business could reach $3,3 billion.

THE RETURN OF TELEVISION

Gathering the family around the table and watching the 20 pm programs on TV is still a bit of a dream that all grandparents would like to relive. According to Deloitte, in 2020 we can go back to living: around 450 million families will watch traditional TV in the world. In Italy there will be over 42 million users in front of the TV.

Although globally an 8% increase between 2018 and 2024 in pay-TV subscriptions is expected, the sector as a whole is not returning the expected numbers: in 2023 the revenues of the entire global TV market will drop by 11%. In this scenario, traditional TV will be able to make a positive contribution thanks to advertising investments, for which an additional 4 billion dollars are expected in 2020, reaching a turnover of 185 billion dollars in 2021.
