Twist in Spain three weeks before the general elections in which no coalition managed to obtain the majority to form the new government, despite the advantage of the Popular Party. The socialist party managed to elect its candidate, Francina Armengol, alla presidency of Congress. The PSOE obtained 178 votes against 139 for the candidate of the Popular Party, Cuca Gamarra. Two turning points - almost simultaneously - that led to a vote that could be decisive for the country's future: on the one hand, the last-minute agreement between the Socialist Party and the Catalan independents of Joins per Catalunya (known as Junts) on the other the quarrel between the PP and the far-right party Vox, which withdrew its support for Gamarra, voting for its own candidate.
Spain towards a new Sanchez government?
Although nothing has yet been established and Junts has stressed that "the agreement is confined to the congressional bureau and has nothing to do with the investiture negotiation", according to many observers Junts' support ad Armengol makes support from the Catalan secessionist party more likely a a possible government led by Pedro Sanchez, removing the possibility of new elections. Indeed, after the latest policies of 23 July, both the left-wing coalition (made up of Psoe, Sumar and other small regional Basque and Catalan parties) and the right-wing one (PP and Vox) have a total of 171 seats against a majority of 176. With the support of the 7 Junts deputies, the left would reach 178, 2 seats more than the majority needed to hand over again the government in the hands of Sanchez.
The agreement between Catalan socialists and separatists
The agreement between the PSOE and Junts was reached at the last minute, after a meeting of the leadership of the party led by the exiled former Catalan governor Carl Puigdemont, which ended a few minutes before the start of the session in Congress. According to Catalan sources, some would have unlocked the negotiation between the two parties concessions made by the socialists on 3 points considered essential by the Catalans. First of all the green light for the use of Catalan, Galician and Basque in Congress. The PSOE also approves the establishment of investigative commissions on the use of the Pegasus program to spy on pro-independence activists and the creation of a commission of inquiry into the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils on August 17th. The agreement also involved the republican separatists of ERC who asked for the "de-judicialisation" of the "political conflict" in Catalonia through the "necessary legal channels".
The quarrel between Vox and the Popular Party
On the other hand, a diametrically opposite scenario occurred in the opposite political alignment. The far right party Vox which in the electoral campaign had also been supported by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, did not get from the popular no guarantee on vice presidents to the Congress of Deputies. The right has therefore split, with Voce not voting for the PP candidates for the presidency of the Congress and the Senate.
After the split, the support of the 33 deputies of the far-right party led by Santiago Abascal for Alberto Nunez Feijoo, candidate for premier of the People's Party.
