The title of records does not stop anymore. Novavax continues on the upside road, with a performance that seems unstoppable. In the February 8th session on the Nasdaq, the stock achieved an increase of more than 10% and futures predict further gains for today.
For the Maryland pharmaceutical giant, 2020 was the year of absolute consecration. Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and the positive trend of the entire sector, Novavax has ended the year with a four-digit increase: +2.697% per cent, one of the best performances worldwide.
Both hopes relating to the company's ability to develop an effective vaccine against Covid 19 and those relating to the possibility of developing a flu serum based on NanoFlu biotechnology. In fact, in March of 2020, Novavax published a study of its flu vaccine containing data that showed a stronger neutralizing antibody response than the industry leader: Sanofi's Fluzone Quadrivalent. Four months later, the company said it had received funding of 1,6 billion dollars from the US government for the development of the anti-Covid vaccine.
After the performance achieved in 2020, many analysts thought that the stock's performance would normalize. And instead since the beginning of the year, the shares have continued to gallop, reaching $319,93 per share for a capitalization of $21,518 billion. The turning point came on January 29, when the stock gained almost 65% in a single day. This time, purchases were encouraged by the announcement of the preliminary results of laboratory studies on the anti-Covid vaccine. According to Novavax, iHis serum would be 95.6% effective against the coronavirus, 89,3% against the English variant of the virus and 60% against the South African one (more than Moderna and Pfizer in the last case).
Based on these data, last February 3, the European Medicines Agency (Ema) has started the exam of the Novavax vaccine in “continuing review”. The company is currently conducting studies in people to evaluate its safety, immunogenicity and its efficacy against Covid-19. EMA will evaluate data from these and other clinical trials as they become available, the agency said, stressing that the ongoing review will continue until there is enough evidence for a formal marketing authorization application. Similar processes are also underway in the UK, Canada and the USA. If all goes as it should, the vaccine could arrive in the second half of 2020.
If scientists take their time, investors seem to have already decreed the success of the Novavax vaccine. Just take a look at the numbers. On January 28, it took $134 to buy a Novavax share, today we're at $319,93. In 8 sessions, the stock gained 137,1% of its value. Since the beginning of the year, the increase is 186,9%.
