Charlie Gard is dead. "Our beautiful baby is gone." This announcement from the parents of little Charlie, the terminally ill British child who has raised a worldwide debate.
The 11-month-old boy's death came after a High Court order in London ruled that Charlie be transferred from hospital to a hospice, where he would no longer have a respirator to keep him alive. The decision was made because Connie Yates and Chris Gard, who had been asking for him to die at home, were unable to reach an agreement with Great Ormond Street Hospital, which instead wanted to continue to care for him in his final days with the appropriate machinery in its facilities. “Our beautiful little boy is gone. We are very proud of Charlie,” his mother Connie said, closing a months-long legal battle.
Pope Francis also commented on the story, through a tweet: "I entrust little Charlie to the Father and I pray for the parents and the people who loved him".
British Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "deeply saddened" by the death of Charlie Gard, adding that "her thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie's parents".
