In the month of November, electricity requirement in Italy it was 25,1 billion in kWh, in line with the same month last year, with a slight growth of 0,2%. He communicates it Terna, the national electricity grid operator, specifying that this result was achieved despite one working day less than in November 2023 (20 versus 21) and an average monthly temperature lower by 0,8°C. Considering the energy demand corrected for calendar and temperature effects, there is a growth of 1,3%.
In the first eleven months of 2024, electricity demand increased by 2,1% compared to the same period in 2023, with a more moderate increase of 1,4% when adjusted for the calendar.
At the territorial level, the differences in demand were contained: at North part a slight increase (+0,1%) was recorded at Centro a more marked growth (+0,7%), while at South and in the Islands a small decrease was noted (-0,1%).
Electricity consumption: decline in industry and services
According l 'Imcei index (Monthly Index of Industrial Electricity Consumption), the energy demand by energy-intensive industrial enterprises has undergone one decrease of 5,8% compared to November 2023, driven by the contraction of sectors such as chemicals, steel and non-ferrous metals. On the contrary, some industries, including cement , mechanics, they recorded a increase in consumption.
Also services, monitored through theIndex Enter, have recorded a decrease of 1,7% compared to the same month of the previous year. Despite this, in the first nine months of the year, consumption in the service sector increased by 4,2%. In particular, almost all sectors recorded negative variations with the exception of professional, scientific and technical activities, public administration and defense.
Domestic production covers 84,9%. Renewables down in November
From the point of view of energy production, the Italy satisfied 84,9% of the demand with domestic production, while the remaining 15,1% was covered byimporting energy from abroad, equal to 3,8 TWh, which however fell by 16,6% compared to the same month of the previous year. National electricity production was 21,5 billion kWh. The renewables they contributed for 33,9% of coverage of the electricity requirement, a share lower than 40,8% than last year, but still significant. Furthermore, from January to November this year renewable sources have 42% covered of the requirement, compared to 37,3% in the first eleven months of 2023.
Among the energy sources, that thermal saw an increase of 23,2%, while the PV grew by 30,6%, benefiting from greater solar irradiation and greater installed capacity. In contrast, production from sources such as carbon (-55,8%), thehydroelectric (-2,9%), theAeolian (-40,8%) and the geothermal (-2,9%) decreased.
Italy surpasses renewable growth targets: 75,8 GW installed
A particularly significant fact concerns the growth of renewable capacity installed in Italy in 2024, which increased by 6.714 MW (+33% compared to the same period of the previous year). As of November 30, the total capacity from renewable sources reached 75,8 GW, of which 36,4 GW is solar and 12,9 GW is wind. From January 2021 to November 2024, a total of 16.934 MW of renewable capacity was installed, exceeding the target set by the Burden Sharing plan by 826 MW.
At the same time, the energy storage capacity: from January to November 2024, the nominal power of storage increased by 1.882 MW, reaching a total of approximately 720 thousand installations for a total capacity of 12.186 MWh and a nominal power of 5.331 MW. Of these, 927 MW are represented by utility scale systems contracted through the capacity market. In high and very high voltage storage systems alone, an increase of 679 MW has been recorded since the beginning of the year.
