The European subsidiary of the Japanese multinational Hitachi has announced the opening of its European Rail Research Center in London.

Hitachi Europe, a subsidiary of the Japanese multinational conglomerate Hitachi, has announced the opening of its European Rail Research Center. The aim of the center is to support the global growth of its social innovation business. The center is located within the Hitachi Rail Europe offices in central London and will form part of the European research division's Transportation Energy & Environment Research Laboratory. The center will focus on a wide range of areas such as rolling stock design (interior and exterior), manufacturing practices, and traffic management and maintenance systems.

Hitachi Europe has a network of research centers in Europe. In April 2011, the company opened the Transportation Energy & Environment Research Laboratory to expand its R&D activities in Europe to rail transport, coal-fired thermal energy, and automotive and energy electronics business . Railway Systems is one of the core businesses in Europe for Hitachi. Hitachi Rail Europe recently signed an agreement to supply and maintain the new fleet of the UK's Intercity Express Programme.
