Company Description

Deutsche Post AG is a German multinational company operating in the postal sector. The company handles the mailing of letters and parcels in Germany, Europe and worldwide. Its head office is in Bonn.

Deutsche Post is the largest courier company in the world. The postal division delivers 61 million letters every day in Germany, making it the largest company in the sector in Europe.
La Express division (DHL) is present in over 220 countries. DHL, a company that offers international freight transport and logistics contracts was acquired in 2002.

The company has nearly 550.000 employees.

The company is listed on the Stock Exchange since 1996. Deutsche Post AG is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and is part of the stock index EuroStoxx50.

La Federal Republic of Germany, through the KfW (the Reconstruction Bank), controls the company through a 20,5% stake. The rest of the capital is given by the free float on the Stock Exchange.

Economic and financial analysis of the company

The company was Founded in 1989. Before that date the German postal service of the Federal Republic was the Deutsche Bundespost, owned by the state monopoly, while the postal service of the GDR was the Deutsche Post of the DDR. Deutsche Post comes privatized in 1996 with the German government owning a 50% stake through the KFW bank. In 2000 German Post AG becomes a completely private company and the German government sells a third of its shares.

Since its privatization, Deutsche Post has activated its plan of diversification of activities and acquisitions of companies in the transport sector which in the space of twenty years have led the company to become a global company and leader in the sector.

Since 1998, Deutsche Post starts buying DHL shares. In 2002 completes the acquisition of the company.

In 1999 it acquired the Dutch distribution company Van Gend & Loos by Nedlloyd and in 2000 the Swiss distribution company Dance.

In August 2003, the company acquired l'Airborne Express based in Seattle. The company integrates Van Gend & Loos, Danzas, Airborne Express and its own EuroExpress into DHL to form DHLExpress.

In 2005, Deutsche Post acquires the logistics company Exel in the UK for £3,7 billion.

In 2014, it acquires StreetScooter GmbH, small manufacturer of electric vehicles.

In 2016, it buys for $315,5 million UK Mail, a UK postal service.

In February 2019 he made an agreement with SF Express (SF Holding) for supply operations in China.

The Deutsche Post operates through three corporate divisions:

  • Post: division dedicated to post in Germany. It provides services along the entire mail value chain.
  • Express Mail Service: division that deals with the transport of mail and parcels all over the world by land or by air, through the subsidiary DHL. It owns five airlines: European Air Transport Leipzig, DHL Air UK, DHL Aero Expreso, SNAS/DHL and Blue Dart Aviation.
  • Supply & Distribution: Provides logistics services through two business units: Provides warehousing and warehouse transportation for customers across a wide variety of industries; manages documents (collection, digitization, printing, filing, archiving) of all kinds.
