ABìCinema: Or like the shadows of the cinema

The ABCinema column continues among the films and curiosities about the letter O of the cinema alphabet. This time it's the turn of Red shadows, Eight and a half and a short story on the origin of the name given to the most famous golden statuette in Hollywood

ABìCinema: Or like the shadows of the cinema

Red shadows that is the FILM in all caps, everything you can expect from a story in pictures. 96 minutes of pure tension, of human portraits, of breathtaking sequences, of images from distant lands (it was released in 1939 and in Italy the following year). It is the adventurous story of a group of people - a prostitute, an alcoholic, a crook banker - variously assorted traveling through the territories of the Apaches led by the mythical Geronimo, the Wild West of the United States as never seen before. The coach will be attacked and the passengers will be rescued by the charge of the VII cavalry: an unforgettable scene! John Ford and John Wayne (Oscar in 1940) with this film enter the history of cinema and mark the milestone.

Eight and a half or 8 ½ by Federico Fellini, the first work, perhaps the best of one of the most important Italian directors (with this film he won the Oscar in 1964). It tells the story of his alter ego, Guido Anselmi, a director grappling with the desire to make a film amidst existential difficulties, memories, creative crises. In fact, it is the story of his own life and his cinematic journey and the title also reflects the reading in this sense: it is the sum of the films made by Fellini so far (entire and half production). The final scene with the circus ballet with music signed by Nino Rota is fully in the history of Italian cinema.

Oscar: the award was born in the United States in 1929 and recognizes the best film, actor, author, screenplay, photography, editing, music. The name derives from a joke by the organization's secretary on the statuette (4 kg gold-plated): "He looks like my uncle Oscar".

Ermanno Olmi: he began his career as a documentary filmmaker and achieved success only in his mature years with L'albero degli zoccoli in 1978. This was followed by Camminacammina in 1982, Lunga vita alla Signora! from 1987, La leggenda del santo bevitore of 1988, up to his last Will come back the meadows of 2014. A director attentive in particular to the human figure in its simple, daily, industriousness, in its culture, in its languages, often strictly in dialect. Olmi has always placed mysticism, introspective reflection, a strongly spiritual vision of the world at the center of his attentions.

Ferzan Ozpetek: was born in Istanbul but soon moved to Italy where he began collaborating with Massimo Troisi in Scusate il tardi (1982). The debut film was presented in 1997 with The turkish bath while the great notoriety comes to him in 2001 with The ignorant fairies where he clearly manifests a marked attention to the introspective investigation of human feelings. Other works by him: The facing window of 2003, Sacred heart of 2004, Saturn against 2007 to get to his latest work Naples veiled of 2017.
